WHAT IT IS
What is a root canal?
Treatment for the inside of the tooth.
Inside every tooth is the pulp, the soft tissue that holds the nerve and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work can let bacteria reach the pulp and inflame or infect it. During root canal treatment, the infected pulp is removed, the canals inside the roots are cleaned and shaped, and the space is filled and sealed.
Some infected teeth don't hurt at all and show up first on an X-ray.
If a tooth can't be saved, the alternative is removing it and replacing it with a dental implant or a bridge.
Root canals are where Dr. Chang has focused his training. His continuing education includes the University of Michigan Endodontic Board Review, and he's attended the American Association of Endodontists annual meeting.
